The incident took place in Hampden County in Springfield around 11:45 a.m., Thursday, June 9.

Police attempted to stop Tyler Scheurer, age 36 of Holyoke after he was spotted speeding on Birnie Avenue, said Ryan Walsh, spokesman for the Springfield Police.

When the officer approached the vehicle Scheurer sped off just missing the officer. When the officer approached the driver again at a stop light the driver again sped away when the light turned green, Walsh said.

Additional help was called for and sheriff's deputies observed the car parked on the 100 block of Avocado Street, Walsh said.

The Springfield officer arrived, but when Scheurer noticed law enforcement he crashed into the sheriff’s vehicle several times. Scheurer then crashed into another vehicle and ran over a sheriff’s deputy’s foot, clipping his arm and leg while driving away, Walsh added.

Officers then saw the vehicle get onto I-91 North, but get off on the Main Street exit driving towards Chicopee. On the 3600 block of Main Street Scheurer crashed into a curb and attempted to run away, police said.

Officers were involved in a short foot pursuit before taking Scheurer into custody, he added.

The sheriff’s deputy suffered minor injuries to his foot, leg, and arm and is expected to be okay, Walsh said.

Scheurer was charged with:

  • Assault with a dangerous weapon (3 Counts)
  • Operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license
  • Resisting arrest
  • Failure to stop for police
  • Leaving the scene of a personal injury crash (3 Counts)
  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
